Hands On Network organizations, known as “Cares”
or “Hands On” organizations, engage over 350,000
volunteers in direct service to their communities
each year. In cities large and small, 52 Hands On
Network organizations have been established in the
U.S., as well as international organizations in the
Philippines, China, the Netherlands and the United
Kingdom, where 27 members organizations of Business
In the Community are also based on the Hands On
Network model for volunteerism.
Hands On Network was formed in 1992 to serve as the
umbrella organization for local Hands On Network
groups. The organization's primary mission is to
provide support for, and strengthen, the existing
affiliate network, while fostering the development
of new Hands On affiliates. With proven best
practices for success, Hands On Network develops
entrepreneurial strategies for bridging community
resources and needs. Hands On Network provides
leading-edge national programming, participation in
shaping national service policy and technology
support.
Hands On Network affiliates are different from other
volunteer organizations because we meet the needs of
modern citizens by extending programs beyond simple
agency referral. Network affiliates guide the entire
service experience, beginning with recruitment,
moving through project management, and finally,
addressing retention and recognition. This process
for transforming an initial interest in helping into
a meaningful service experience has proven effective
for both adult and youth volunteers. Hands On
Network is proud to support a committed corps of
volunteers engaged in changing our nation through
service.
