Launched in February 2007 by the
Hands On Network,
the Campus Initiative engages college students in
volunteerism and leadership. The Initiative
recognizes the power of the over 250,000 students
living in Boston and creates opportunities tailored
for their unique needs and skills. This program is
part of a nationally recognized network enabling
students to interact in service and leadership
opportunities throughout the United States.
Leadership opportunities and service projects
provide the foundation for new leaders of community
service and development in Boston.
HISTORY
Between 2005 and 2006, the Corporation for National
and Community Service reported that volunteerism
among college students grew from 2.7 million to 3.3
million, a 20% increase in one year. According to
Higher Education Research Institute’s 2005 survey,
it was reported that 67.3% of college freshman
intend to participate in volunteering. So, it’s
clear young people are looking for outlets and
resources when it comes to volunteerism and
leadership!
WHAT THE INITIATIVE DOES
The Campus Initiative transforms students into
volunteers and leaders with the skills to work
positively in service. Students are encouraged to
view their role in service both during their time in
college and in the future as young, socially
conscious professionals and role models.
OUR PARTNERS
Currently, the Initiative is partnered with seven
campuses in Boston. Our first major event, the
Campus Day of Service, was held in September 2007 on
project sites throughout Boston and created a new
momentum for the Initiative. In the future we hope
to expand the program to more schools and cities,
and form international project relationships within
our affiliate network.
