Prepare materials for low-income youth for Jumpstart!
One of the goals of our program is to increase children’s vocabulary skills, which is an important variable in later reading success. These vocabulary labels are essential because they remind volunteers to explain several key vocabulary words to the children as they read the story together.
This project is reserved for Boston Cares Members who have attended an orientation.
T-accessible: Orange Line or Blue Line to State Street, Red Line to South Station.
About Jumpstart:
Jumpstart is a national early education organization and our mission is to ensure that all children enter school prepared to succeed.
To accomplish this goal we recruit and train college students and community members to work with preschool children in low-income neighborhoods, with a special focus on language and literacy skills.
Jumpstart Community Corps is a unique program within Jumpstart because our volunteers are mostly older adults (55 and older). Jumpstart Community Corps members work preschool students in eight preschools in Roxbury, Mattapan, South Boston and Jamaica Plain.
What Boston Cares members have to say about volunteering at Jumpstart:
"Jumpstart has a great mission. The tasks are also fun and interesting. You get to read the books!" -Boston Cares Volunteer
