Plum Island Beach Cleanup

Do you await the arrival each summer of migrating shorebirds to Plum Island/Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation? Or do you enjoy walking on miles of pristine beaches? Help keep those beaches clean for people and wildlife by participating in our annual beach cleanup on Saturday, September 13. Volunteers of all ages will remove trash and debris from the roads, trails, and beaches. Last year 100 volunteers collected over 2,000 pounds of debris over 11 miles – everything from cigarette butts to car parts, tires, Styrofoam, and thousands of plastic disks from the Hooksett, NH, wastewater treatment plant disaster! Data about trash collected by volunteers will be entered into a database by the Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, D.C., for the purpose of tracking the sources of waste.

Supplies will be provided by Mass Audubon staff, but volunteers are advised to bring their own work gloves.

Spend the day (9:00-5:00) or just a few hours helping with this important effort.

This event is organized by the Joppa Flats Education Center and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge as part of COASTSWEEP.
