Construct Bookshelves at Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2016

Since 2006, Boston Cares has organized A Day ON, Not a Day OFF projects for MLK Day that have collectively engaged 4,800 individuals of all ages from Boston’s neighborhoods and surrounding communities. Since 2010, we have partnered with the Mayor’s office/City of Boston, Mass. Service Alliance, the Corporation for National & Community Service, Target and Boston Public Schools around MLK Day.

For MLK Day 2016, Boston Cares will create opportunities for 650 volunteers to support literacy programming in classrooms. MLK Day volunteers will create Reading Success Kits for the Lee Academy, Winship Elementary, and Edward Everett Elementary Schools within BPS. Each Reading Success Kit will include a small bookshelf, grade-specific books, literacy games, hand-made picture books to serve as “story starters’” and classroom sets of literacy flashcards and reading journals. Additionally, students at Lee Academy will each receive a lap desk they can take home with them to support their learning outside of school hours.

By signing up below, you are registering to help us build, sand, and paint 50 bookshelves.
Space is limited so sign up soon. Pre-registration is required!

This year we are pleased to partner with Boston Public Schools and will be holding our Day of Service at Boston Latin School.
