Sort & Inspect Food at the Greater Boston Food Bank

The health and safety of our volunteers, Volunteer Leaders, and the people we serve is our top priority. We are working with our Community Partners to ensure that state & city guidance is followed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Read about our Safety Requirements.
Volunteers are needed to help the Greater Boston Food Bank to inspect, sort, and box food to be sent to 600+ hunger relief agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.). With volunteer efforts, the Food Bank can feed more than 140,000 people per month. Please note, volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and this project can be physically tiring.

About the Greater Boston Food Bank:
1 in 8 people in Eastern Massachusetts are struggling with hunger. The GBFB has over 650 food sources. One of their connections is with local grocers that donate food that might have been overproduced, incorrectly labeled or packaged, or is not selling well. They also accept donations from restaurants, universities, food drives, and individuals.

COVID-19 Safety at GBFB
  • All staff, visitors, and volunteers answer 9 screening questions before entering the facility. Answers are not recorded. If they answer “yes”, we cannot allow them to enter the building.  The questions can be found here: https://www.tfaforms.com/4835307. Volunteers can register within 24 hours of their shift.
  • Volunteers are required to use a cloth face covering, as recommended by the CDC.
  • Handwashing is required before starting the volunteer activity and at the conclusion of their shift.
  • Disposable gloves must be worn during the volunteer shift. Gloves are provided by GBFB.
  • Always maintain 6 ft. physical distance from others. We rearranged our project setup to allow for 6 ft. physical distancing.  Lines have been taped on the floor to indicate 6 ft. spacing in areas where volunteers congregate.
  • Group size is limited to 20 or less people per shift.
  • Hand sanitizer is available onsite.
  • Workstations are sanitized and disinfected at the beginning and end of each volunteer shift.
