INACTIVE- the Youth Success Corps - Become a Homework Tutor at Maverick Landing

Maverick Landing Community Services is currently seeking homework help/tutor volunteers to work a few hours each week with younger kids (ages 7-12), preferably individuals who have experience working with young urban youth.  

The makerspace programs run Monday-Thursday through the school year (Sept-May), and the space is open from 4 pm to 7:30 pm. The first hour and a half is dedicated to homework time, while the rest of the time is facilitated programming. Volunteer Homework Help Tutors are needed from 4-5:30pm.

They are ideally looking for someone who can make a weekly commitment, but are open to talking with candidates who may only be able to participate once or twice a month. 

Who You Are:

You are someone who enjoys helping other people, especially youth, and wants to make community impact. You believe in empowerment of young people, and have experience in the area of tutoring. 

Orientation:

The orientation for Makerspace Homework Help Tutors will take place on September 10, from 6:30-7:30pm at Maverick Landing. All volunteers will be need to complete a CORI background check, so please bring a goverment issued ID. This is required to work directly with youth.

*This opportunity requires a regular commitment - weekly or bi weekly as part of the Youth Success Corps

About Maverick Landing:

Maverick Landing Community Services (MLCS) is a family-based non profit organization in East Boston that helps children, youth, and adults works to advance educational and economic goals by building 21st-century skills. We are based in the heart of a mixed-income housing development where nearly 1400 people live. 

Our kids and teens programming includes a 1,000 square foot makerspace for kids ages 7 to 12 and a teen makerspace and production lab where teens are taught to design, innovate, and develop educational tools and toys that help children to develop visual spatial literacy--an important foundation for engaging interest and success in STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art/Design, and Math) fields.

Our adult programming includes English classes provided with support from English for New Bostonians and job readiness and placement provided in partnership with Boston Career Connections (BCC).
