Coach Young Writers at the Young Authors' Book Project - 826 Boston

Calling all editors, writers, and publishers: share your skills with students during 826 Boston's Young Authors' Book Project!

Make history come alive and empower young students to find their voices during the Young Authors' Book Project. With the help of volunteer tutors, this literary experience will allow students from The Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School to draft, revise, and polish pieces of original writing about meaningful landmarks in the Grove Hall neighborhood. Each will be printed in a professionally published book.

About the opportunity: Volunteering will take place at the Lilla G. Frederick Middle School in Dorchester from 9:30 AM - 1:15 PM (returning volunteers can arrive at 10:00am).

Volunteers will:
  • Receive a 30-minute tutor training (first session only).
  • Work with students individually or in small groups.
  • Support students as they brainstorm writing topics related to the book's theme.
  • Help students through the drafting process.
  • Assist students as they revise and edit their pieces.
  • Participate in a 10 to 15 minute volunteer debrief conversation.
Any interested college students or adults who have writing, editing, or publishing experience are encouraged to get involved, as are volunteers who have experience working with English Language Learners (ELS 1), special education students, or who are proficient in Spanish.

All volunteers must complete a BPS CORI form online before volunteering and bring an I.D. or passport to their volunteer session at the school for verification.

About the School: The Lilla G. Frederick Middle School serves a student body that is 54% English LanguageLearners, 24% special needs students, and 73% economically disadvantaged students. The school is located in Dorchester and is easily accessible via the 16 bus.

About the mission: The Young Authors' Book Project aims to create a unique opportunity for Frederick Middle School's English Language Learners and students of color to research and write about their community and to contribute to the historical record of their neighborhood.
