MISSION The mission of the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House is to continue its historical legacy as it strengthens and empowers the children, youth, families and individuals living in the Area IV neighborhood of Cambridge. They strive to build a strong community through education and resources for children and families, by providing positive role models for youth, support for basic needs, opportunities for community gatherings, and outreach to under-served population. DESCRIPTION Built in 1807, the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House, located in Cambridge, is the birthplace of Margaret Fuller, famed author, feminist, transcendentalist, and social critic. She was born during a time of much intellectual fervor in New England and campaigned for women’s rights and equal education. By 1902, the entire house was used as a Settlement House. The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House purpose is to strengthen family life spiritually and materially, to be a center for the friendly cooperation of neighborhood people, to afford the means for the expression of artistic and domestic interest and to establish the habits of good citizenship. Programs offered at the house include the School Age Care Program for young people during after-school hours; an eight week summer camp; an emergency food pantry; computer classes; and a street outreach program for at-risk young adults in need of services and resources. IMPACT The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House currently provides direct services to over 800 families, children and individuals from Area IV of Cambridge, one of the poorest and most densely populated neighborhoods in Cambridge. These services include providing more than 350 people with monthly food supplies from their food pantry, 26 children with School Age programs, 20-40 families and individuals with computer center services, and case management and referrals for up to 30 young adults in need of education, jobs, healthcare and other basic resources.
