MISSION Project Bread's mission is to alleviate, prevent, and ultimately end hunger in Massachusetts. The agencies' goals are to make food accessible to people who would not otherwise have adequate food; to increase public awareness and understanding of hunger; to effect public policies to prevent hunger; and to empower people by offering postive avenues of action, including the Walk for Hunger. DESCRIPTION As the leading hunger-relief organization in Massachusetts, Project Bread provides direct services to hungry people across the state. The Walk for Hunger is the nation's largest annual one-day fund-raiser to alleviate local hunger. It is a 20-mile walk through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, and Cambridge on the first Sunday in May. In addition to the money raised from the Walk for Hunger, Project Bread has a variety of different programs and services to help hungry people. These programs include the Child Nutrition Outreach Project, Food Stamp Outreach and Website, the FoodSource Hotline, and the Massachusetts Child Hunger Initiative. Related Websites include: www.gettingfoodstamps.org, www.meals4kids.org, and www.nerahn.org. IMPACT During the past 30 years, the Walk for Hunger has raised nearly $40 million to help hungry children, families and individuals in Massachusetts.
