Accessible Recreation Fair

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) Universal Access Program's mission is to provide outdoor recreation opportunities in Massachusetts state parks for visitors of all abilities, achieved through site improvements, specialized equipment, and accessible programs.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation's Universal Access Program (UAP) is dedicated to providing outdoor recreation opportunities in Massachusetts State Parks for visitors of all abilities. To kick off the summer, the UAP is hosting an Accessible Recreation Fair at Herter Park/Artesani Playground in Brighton. This fun and rewarding event is a special way for folks with disabilities and their families and friends to explore accessible recreation in the parks.

We're looking for people to help with the set up and break down (including erecting pop-up tents and setting up tables and chairs), registration, serving refreshments, and monitoring the bike paths and the first aid area. We also need people to help out with the many activities at the fair including face painting, decorating and flying small kites, and adaptive cycling and pickle ball. Whatever your role, you’ll be helping folks have fun!

All activities require being outdoors for 6 hours, under a tent. Games and Sighted Guides, involve socializing with fair goers, moving around the fair, and potentially offering balance support. Face painting and kite making involve socializing with fair goers and assisting with painting, folding paper, coloring, and gluing decorations. Parking lot management involves standing and walking around the parking lot, talking with drivers, and coordinating with DCR Rangers about safety concerns. Set-up includes bending and lifting up to 80lb with assistance. All of our volunteer stations have jobs that can be modified, so please let us know what your needs are!

Volunteers who have experience working with people of all abilities, Bilingual in English/Spanish, comfortable working outdoors, and Sight Guide experience are encouraged to sign up!

MBTA Accessibility: 70 and 86 Bus routes
