Community Conversations: Learn to Empower Youth Through Service!
Join us for a training led by Boston Cares and Teen Empowerment! This session will provide an opportunity for volunteers who are interested in youth development to engage in an open dialogue, receive a training from the Boston-based organization Teen Empowerment, and to learn about opportunities to volunteer with youth this summer, including: MLK Summer Scholars John Hancock's MLK Scholars program addresses what is deemed a critical need in Boston - summer jobs for city youth. Each summer, John Hancock sponsors the employment of over 600 Boston teens at nearly 70 local non-profit organizations—the largest summer jobs program of its kind in United States. The MLK Scholars program is built on the inspirational values and legacy of its namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ServiceWorks Boston Cares ServiceWorks is a youth engagement program developed as part of an initiative through Points of Light, AmeriCorps, and the Citi Foundation. Through ServiceWorks, we partner with youth organizations in the Boston area and offer a unique curriculum designed to engage young people aged 16-24, whom we call “Service Scholars,” in community service. Corps The Boston Cares Corps Program is an impact driven opportunity for volunteers dedicated to building and strengthening their skills, deepening their community engagement, and making a difference in the lives of Greater Bostonians. Our Corps focus on improving skills and resources in ESOL, Basic Technology, and Youth and Education. The Corps program combines Boston Cares’ signature flexibility with a focused commitment to a partner and the resources to make a measurable change. This opportunity is open to all existing Boston Cares members and new members. Schedule: o 5:30-6 New Volunteer Orientation (as needed*) o 6-7:30 Training - Teen Empowerment led by Heang Ly o 7:30~8:30 Programs Overview - MLK Scholars, ServiceWorks, CS First *Only volunteers who have not yet had a New Volunteer Orientation with Boston Cares are required to come at 5:30. All other volunteers may arrive at 6PM.** **Please note that Boston Cares collects a one-time registration fee from all new members. The registration fee is used to cover the costs associated with managing volunteer projects. The fee will be collected at your New Volunteer Orientation session, and can be paid using cash, check or a credit card. The registration fee structure is: $25 for individual members $40 for families $15 for students, seniors and unemployed Fee waived for active duty military personnel, active AmeriCorps volunteers and Middle, & High Schoolers.
