Help with Fourth Presbyterian Church Food Pantry

The health and safety of our volunteers, Volunteer Leaders, and the people we serve is our top priority. We are working with our Community Partners to ensure that state & city guidance is followed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Read about our Safety Requirements.

Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, there has been an increase in individuals and families visiting the food pantry and a higher than normal need for volunteers to support. This volunteer opportunity is open to the community and any individual with a Boston Cares account and who follows our safety requirements may sign up. Having attended a Boston Cares orientation is not required. Please e-mail volunteers@bostoncares.org if you have questions.

About the organization: Fourth Presbyterian Church has been a part of South Boston since 1870. Situated between two housing projects, the church has at the heart of its mission a commitment to serve the neighborhood, touching the lives of well over 650 people every month. The Food Pantry takes place twice per month and volunteers are needed to help with unloading food for the pantry on Fridays, packing food for distribution, and distributing food on Tuesdays.

July and August Schedule:

July 10-11 and July 24-25
- Load-in: 1-4 PM Friday
- Packing: 4:00-6:00 PM, 7:00-9:00 PM Friday
- Packing: 9 AM-12 PM Saturday
- Distribution: 1-4 PM Saturday

August 7-8
- Load-in: 2-5 PM Friday
- Packing: 5:00-6:30 PM, 7:00-9:00 PM Friday
- Packing: 9 AM-12 PM Saturday
- Distribution: 1-4 PM Saturday

Friday Projects: volunteers will help with unloading food for the pantry. Volunteers will carry goods from the truck into the church for storage. We may also begin packing bags for guests. Volunteers can expect to do some lifting, standing, and walking up and down steps. Being able to lift heavy boxes is a plus (but not required)!

Saturday Projects: volunteers will help with pantry set-up and packing food bags in the morning. In the afternoon, volunteers will assist with food distribution to clients.

Please keep in mind:

1) Only come if you are healthy and feel safe! Please do not come if you feel unwell (have had a fever in the last 4 days or have had or been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 2 weeks). Also, please do not come if you fall in the high risk category. (We love that you want to help, but you must stay safe!)

2) Please bring a mask, scarf, or bandana to cover your face. Also, wear clothes that you do not care if they get really dirty. Many of the boxes that we receive have been warehoused for a while. Wear closed-toes shoes. Lastly, dress for the weather. We will spend 1/2 our time outside.

3) We recommend you bring a labelled water bottle. Because of COVID-19, we have limited access to our kitchen.

MBTA accessible: two blocks from Andrew station on the Red Line. Street parking available, but do pay attention to time limits and permit requirements. Unfortunately, the parking lot at H&R Block routinely tows.

Youth-Friendly: Ages 10 and up welcome (ages 10-15 parent required to participate).
