Facilitate Professional Development with Youth through the MLK Scholars Program

About MLK Scholars:

Boston Cares is pleased to join John Hancock, The Boston Globe, Partners Healthcare, Boston University, The Ad Club, and the City of Boston to produce the 2019 MLK Scholars Program. The program will provide summer jobs in corporate and community settings for more than 600 Boston teenagers.

As part of the summer experience, youth participants, from neighborhoods throughout the city, are required to attend bi-weekly personal development workshops, called Leadership Forums. The Leadership Forums incorporate the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King in interactive leadership development workshops that focus on youth success on the job, at school and in the community. Scholars will build meaningful relationships with other youth and volunteer table facilitators while learning professional development skills with guest speakers and interactive group activities.

Volunteer table facilitators are needed to help conduct productive and interactive conversations with the teens at these forums. Using a curriculum guide tailored to each session, facilitators will engage the youth in conversation, interactive exercises and reflection on the weekly topic. Table facilitators will be provided with the curriculum in advance and are prepped with a Friday training before each session.

We hope that volunteers will be able to attend all four forums! You will be placed with the same group of teens for each forum, so having the same volunteers allows for consistency and productive relationship building!

July 9th will be a training on working with youth at the Boston Cares office.

The Forums will take place on BU's campus on the following dates:
          -July 19th
          -July 26th
          -August 9th
          -August 16th

9:00am: Breakfast and students arrive
9:30am: Opening activities with video and speaker
10:30am: Small table discussion
