Snowden International School at Copley (BPS)

The Muriel S. Snowden International School at Copley is one of the first public schools in the United States to be dedicated to international studies. It was established over a four-year period at Copley Square High School which had been founded in 1966. At that time, the school‘s focus was the implementation of innovative instructional methods in the classroom, with a communication arts theme. In 1983, the school began the transition from Copley Square High School to The Muriel S. Snowden International School At Copley, with a theme of international studies through the study of modern languages and cultures. This was a collaborative effort between The Freedom House, Inc., a community agency, and the Boston Public Schools. In 1988, the school was renamed for Muriel Sutherland Snowden who was the co-founder of Freedom House, Inc. She had been instrumental in bringing the concept of international studies into the Boston schools.
