Join us for the Boston Cares MLK Day of Service!

This family-friendly event offers opportunities for 300+ volunteers of all ages to come together and reflect on Dr. King's life and legacy by being in community as we create items requested by our local nonprofit partners.

All participants must be registered in advance. For volunteers under the age of 13, please register the adult volunteer first and then email us at volunteers@bostoncares.org with the name and date of birth of the youth volunteers. Youth volunteers aged 13+ can be registered with their own account. Volunteers under age 18 will need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian accessible here

Assemble Hygiene Kits for Victory Programs - Boston Living Center (Ages 5+)

Volunteers will assemble travel-sized hygiene kits for clients of Victory Programs. These kits will include everyday essentials, such as shampoo, soap, and toothpaste, to be distributed by the Mobile Prevention Team during street outreach. Victory Programs opens the door to hope, recovery, and community for individuals and families facing homelessness, addiction, or other chronic health conditions. They foster a world where everyone has access to safe, healthy, and inclusive communities, offering individualized care from a strengths-based philosophy to help clients identify and achieve their personal goals. In practical terms, they meet people where they are and help them address the unique challenges that stand in the way of stability, safety, independence, and participation in community life.

Make Valentines for Seniors (Ages 5+) 

Volunteers will make Valentine's Day cards, using construction paper, doilies, and creativity! These cards will be distributed to the clients of Ethos. Ethos is a private, not-for-profit organization that promotes the independence, dignity, and well-being of the elderly and disabled. Ethos achieves its mission through the coordination and delivery of high-quality, affordable home and community-based care. In all aspects of its work, Ethos supports family caregiving, fosters social interaction, and respects cultural diversity.

Make Activity Kits for Students (Ages 7+)

Volunteers will assemble activity kits for students served by School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA). These fun and engaging activity kits will comprise of everything a child needs to make their own craft or creation--perfect for a snowy day! SOWMA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational, social, and emotional needs of students impacted by homelessness and poverty. Their key programs include tutoring, mentoring, and ensuring students have grade-appropriate supplies for school. Their mission is to ensure that every student, regardless of circumstance, has the opportunity to reach their potential and become a confident, self-sustaining member of their community. They aim to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty by expanding their impact across the Commonwealth to educate kids, empower families, and end the cycle of homelessness – one child at a time.

Create Decorations for Pine Street Inn Celebrations (Ages 5+)

Volunteers will create placemats, wall decor, and paper flowers for Pine Street Inn's Valentine's Dinner and Mother's Day Brunch. These decorations will add beautiful and festive cheer for clients as they celebrate. Pine Street Inn partners with homeless individuals to help them move from the streets and shelter to a home, and assists formerly homeless individuals in retaining housing. They provide street outreach, emergency services, supportive housing, job training, and connections to employment. They tirelessly advocate for collaborative solutions to end homelessness.

Assemble "Meal-In-A-Jar" Kits for Pine Street Inn (Ages 16+)

Volunteers will assemble ingredients for shelf-stable, one-pot meals into jars. These meals-in-jars allow clients of Pine Street Inn to prepare quick and easy meals for themselves in supportive housing. Pine Street Inn partners with homeless individuals to help them move from the streets and shelter to a home, and assists formerly homeless individuals in retaining housing. They provide street outreach, emergency services, supportive housing, job training, and connections to employment. They tirelessly advocate for collaborative solutions to end homelessness.
