Garden Along the Greenway

The Rose Kennedy Greenway is a mile-and-a-half of contemporary parks in the heart of Boston. The Greenway, a roof garden atop a highway tunnel, connects people and the city with beauty and fun.

Volunteers have a unique opportunity to help with the organic maintenance of this dynamic green space! Working alongside Greenway Horticulture staff, volunteers can learn more about the Greenway and gardening. Projects are based on current park needs and primarily include light-duty gardening tasks such as raking, weeding, mulching, pruning, and planting. This project can be fast paced and please keep in mind that many of our tasks involve bending and lifting, though we are often able to make accommodations. Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions in this regard. No experience is necessary!

For the October 23rd date, volunteers will be fixing a stone dust path which includes laying down new stone, raking it out, and possibly weeding.

We will be fixing a stone dust path (laying down new stone, raking it out) and possibly weeding as a secondary project.

Rain dates are scheduled for the following day at the same time. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes and should wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty. Water and light snacks will be provided. Please keep in mind that we do not have a locked area to store bags and you will be responsible for all personal property. Projects take place in the Greenway parks from Chinatown to the North End. Exact location varies based on the project needs and will be provided prior to the project.

We scale our projects to the number of volunteers we are expecting, so please make sure to remove yourself from this project if you can no longer attend. If all spots have been taken, please email the volunteer leader (below) to see if you can still join!

Youth friendly, 14+.  All volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old.  All volunteers under 18 years old must bring a permission form signed by a parent or guardian to give to the Project Leader.  Please email youth@bostoncares.org or call 617-422-0910 x208 if you would like to bring youth to the project.

T-Accessible: The Greenway is accessible by most MBTA lines and commuter rail. Exact location of the projects will vary, please keep an eye out for a note from the Volunteer Leader with the exact location.
