Judge a Citywide Debate Tournament for High School Students

Volunteer judges listen to students, providing vital reinforcement for the notion that students have valuable ideas to contribute to society. After the debate, judges offer encouragement, share advice for the next round, and tell the tournament organizers who won.

With a student to judge ratio of only 4:1, this is a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience working directly with some amazing students.

"If you want to feel good and be inspired and empowered, then judge tournaments at the BDL. It's a great opportunity to help out your community because these students are actually making a difference." - Lorena, BDL Alumna and Volunteer

No debate experience is necessary to be an effective judge. Volunteers are trained at the start of each tournament and students are expected to adapt their arguments to their judges, whether they’ve debated for a decade or never seen a debate in their lives.

All volunteers will need to pass a CORI background checked and be trained before their first volunteer shift. If you have not been trained, there will be a training a half hour before the first session. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Without volunteers, debaters would not have this life-changing experience. Please join us!

Debates on 3/13 and 3/14 will take place at Charlestown High School (15-minute walk from Community College on the Orange Line).

About Boston Debate League

The Boston Debate League (BDL) is a non-profit organization that works to integrate argumentation and competitive debate into public schools in the Greater Boston Area to develop critical thinkers ready for college, career, and the world around them. Our vision is that young people in Boston are engaged in critical discourse, informed by evidence, and empowered to lead.

As part of that work, our After-School Debate League runs twelve tournaments per year for over 800 BPS students from 40 middle and high schools. Nearly 600 volunteers from all walks of life and from all neighborhoods in Boston and beyond make this possible.
