Assemble Grocery Bags for Distribution at the American Red Cross Food Pantry

The health and safety of our volunteers, Volunteer Leaders, and the people we serve is our top priority. We are working with our Community Partners to ensure that state & city guidance is followed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Read about our Safety Requirements.

Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, there has been an increase in individuals and families visiting the food pantry and a higher than normal need for volunteers to support. This volunteer opportunity is open to the community and any individual with a Boston Cares account and who follows our safety requirements may sign up. Having attended a Boston Cares orientation is not required. Please e-mail volunteers@bostoncares.org if you have questions.

Volunteers will prepare bags of groceries with fresh and frozen foods (may include meat and fish) as well as dry goods and cans to be distributed the next morning to clients. All volunteers are REQUIRED to wear sturdy shoes or sneakers. For safety reasons, no open-toed shoes or sandals will be allowed in the warehouse. During the cooler months, please bring warm clothing and a pair of gloves, as it can get cold in the warehouse while handling frozen food packages.

Please do not bring any valuables (i.e. smartphones, jewelry, etc.) to this project. If this is not possible, please keep all valuable items with you at all times. The Red Cross Food Pantry is not responsible for any lost items.

Youth Friendly, 15+. All volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old. All volunteers under 18 years old must bring a permission form signed by a parent or guardian to give to the Project Leader. Please email youth@bostoncares.org or call 617-422-0910 x208 if you would like to bring youth to this project.

Please Note:
As of Tuesday April 14, 2020 the Red Cross Food Pantry will be changing their operations shifting to a two-team model. This will help them continue operations in the event of an exposure after a mandatory closure for cleaning and more. Their goal operationally is to limit the number of folks that may need to self-quarantine after that mandatory closure.

There will be an A team and a B team.
The A team volunteers will be working every Wednesday, Friday (Boston Public School Initiative) and Saturday events.
The B team volunteers will be working every Tuesday event.
Those who work on one team’s work day will not be allowed to work on the other team’s work day. For example, if you register for a Tuesday event, you will only be able to work on Tuesday events going forward until further notice. If a volunteer works on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, they will not be allowed to work on a Tuesday.
