Judge an English or Spanish Debate Tournament for High School Students

The Boston Debate League hosts debate tournaments for young people from Boston to debate federal policy topics in either English or Spanish. At tournaments, volunteers partake as judges in debate rounds. Judges listen to debate rounds, provide valuable feedback, and determine a winner. Debate builds confidence, academic skills, intellectual curiosity, and creativity. You can make sure that young people in Boston have the opportunity to debate, support their growth, and affirm the idea that young people have important ideas to contribute to society by serving as a volunteer judge.

Everyone is welcome to serve: no debate experience is necessary to be a great judge! New volunteers will be required to watch our New Volunteer Judge Training Video, which is approximately 30 minutes. We will also require new volunteers to attend an in-person training that is built into the volunteer shift. Returning volunteers, BDL alumni, and those with previous policy debate experience will be required to watch our Quick Review Volunteer Judge Training Video, which is approximately 15 minutes.

Volunteers should also register in the Boston Debate League Portal: Sign up Here! (to help the BDL place you within the tournament) and an eCORI form. Both are required.

All volunteers should also complete the following form: Volunteer Questionaire. Feel free to review the Pre-Tournament Checklist for Debate Judges. The list details all of the things volunteers need to have done prior to the tournament.

All debates will be held in person. You will receive the location name and address of the location as well as a more detailed logistical email closer to the dates of the tournaments. All tournaments are MBTA accessible and the full list of locations is currently viewable on our website.
