Thanksgiving Grocery Deliveries to BPS Families!

Boston Community Hub Schools is a long-term strategy to actively engage the resources of each community around student and family success. In a Boston Community Hub School, the school community intentionally looks at its assets (the great things that are happening) and opportunities (the things they want to improve) to take action to make their school-community the best it can be. Along with Career and Technical Education and STEM, the Community Hub School strategy has been identified as vital to the education of Boston’s children, and to the future of Boston as a whole.

Through this event, over 1,100 families from Boston Public Schools who might not otherwise have the resources to share a holiday meal will be served!

Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver Thanksgiving groceries to families from the Boston Community Hub Schools! In this role, volunteers will pick up groceries from the Red Cross in Dorchester and deliver them to families around Boston. Pick-ups will begin around 1 PM and continue until around 3:30 PM. Volunteers will be assigned a 15 minute pick-up window, and deliveries usually take about 2 hours. Routes will be assigned based on the information you share with the Opportunity Leader (where you are heading, what languages you speak). You will deliver to about 10 houses (if you'd like to do more than 10 houses, please let the Opportunity Leader know that you're interested in a double route!). This year, all volunteer drivers will call/text the families the night before to ensure smooth deliveries the following day! The Opportunity Leader can provide a $20 gas card for volunteer drivers!

Volunteer drivers must have a personal vehicle, drivers license, and be comfortable driving in Boston. You should be able to lift 2 grocery bags with produce, dry goods, and a frozen turkey to deliver it to recipients at their homes. If you plan to drive with a friend, please only sign up the ONE driver as routes are based on the number of cars picking up.

Multilingual drivers or monolingual drivers who are comfortable using Google Translate are needed! Patience is key in navigating language barriers and we appreciate your empathetic approach to communicating with the families we serve.
