Volunteer Tutors @ BEST Hospitality Training

BEST’s mission is to provide individuals with the education, skills, and training to excel in the hospitality industry and in their personal lives. We do this through a variety of services that include job-specific skills training programs and access to educational courses (ESOL, computers, skills certifications), all of which are supported by career and academic coaching. BEST’s partnerships include UNITE HERE Local 26 (the hotel and restaurant workers’ union), 40+ hospitality employers, government and private foundations, and community organizations.

At BEST we strive to create a diverse work culture that closely matches the diversity of those we serve. We seek applicants from all backgrounds to ensure we get the best, most creative talent on our team.

Volunteers will uplift our hospitality workers by strengthening essential skills that will help them to thrive personally and professionally. From strengthening skills in English communication & literacy, to helping them prepare for the Citizenship exam, volunteers have an opportunity to help transform the lives of our students.

As a Volunteer Tutor You Will:

  • Be paired with a student who wants to strengthen their skills in: English, literacy, math, or technology.
  • Help students prepare for the citizenship exam or a certification test.
  • Come prepared for each session with lessons and materials tailored to your student’s skill level and goals. BEST will provide plenty of resources to help you plan and lead successful tutoring sessions!
  • Help your student build confidence and a positive attitude toward learning by celebrating their progress.
  • Respect your student’s choices about how they want to learn.
  • Praise their successes and be supportive when mistakes happen.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with BEST students and team members through open and respectful communication.
  • It is beneficial if you have tutoring/teaching experience, are familiar using virtual meeting platforms/ online tools, speak a second+ language!

Time Committment: Meet at least once a week for 30–60 minutes over a 3-month commitment, either in person or on Zoom (volunteers and students can extend their time together if they’d like). Volunteers are accepted immediately and on a rolling basis.

Volunteers Must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
