Boston Cares' 18th Annual MLK Service Event

Join us for the return of in-person volunteer projects for MLK Day Weekend 2023!

Volunteers aged 12 and under can attend a volunteer opportunity with a Parent or Guardian if they meet the age requirements stated in the opportunity description; it is also required that a signed Youth Waiver be brought by the accompanying adult to the volunteer opportunity. To register youth volunteers aged 12 and under for a volunteer opportunity, a Parent or Guardian must email volunteers@bostoncares.org to have them added manually to the project in our system.


Serve Meals at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans (ages 18+)
Downtown Boston

Volunteer to help the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) serve a prepared meal to Veteran residents.  The NECHV equips Veterans who are facing or at-risk of homelessness with the tools for economic self-sufficiency and to provide them a path to achieve successful and dignified independent living.

Serve Lunch at the Boston Living Center (ages 18+)
Back Bay

Help prepare and serve delicious and nutritious meals to Boston Living Center (BLC) members! Victory Programs’ Boston Living Center (BLC) is a community and resource center that fosters the wellness of all HIV positive people and responds to the changing needs of the HIV/AIDS community through education, treatment information, and support services.
 

Create Safety Kits for Residents at Fenway Community Development Corporation (ages 10+)
Boston Latin School
Monday, January 16th - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

 
Help create and distribute safety kits for Fenway Community Development Corporation residents, including important information/resources that residents should have in case of an emergency. Fenway CDC works to preserve Fenway as a vibrant and diverse neighborhood by developing affordable housing, providing programs that enrich lives, and strengthening community voices.

Paint MLK Themed Murals (ages 14+)
Monday, January 16th, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM 
Boston Latin School

 

Volunteers will paint large plywood murals that have been pre-traced that will be hung along fences in Southwest Corridor Parkway, nearby one of Dr. King’s former residences. Murals have been designed to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King as well as the community surrounding the Southwest Corridor. Volunteers will be provided all materials needed to complete murals as well as instructions and guidance from Boston Cares staff.

Create Valentines for Seniors (ages 5+)

Volunteers will create hand-made Valentines Day cards for isolated seniors served by Ethos.  Join us virtually by making Valentines at home, or volunteer with us in-person!

Allies for Immigrants Tutor Training (ages 18+)

Join the Allies for Immigrants ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Corps! Allies volunteers are a part of a network of volunteers who share a passion for enhancing English skills for adult learners. Corps volunteers serve at least twice per month (in person or virtually)  supporting ESOL classrooms,  assisting in citizenship classes, and leading conversation groups for help practicing English.

Kick-start your commitment to volunteering over MLK Weekend by signing up for a New Volunteer Orientation! Boston Cares partners with schools and nonprofits throughout the region to collaboratively address community needs by connecting our partners with volunteers.  Get started as a volunteer for our flexible Calendar program by attending a New Volunteer Orientation - after which, you’ll have access to sign up for any of the hundreds of opportunities on our Calendar each month.  For those joining us during MLK Weekend, we are waiving our one-time new volunteer fee!
 

MLK Day Weekend Sponsor Bed Build
Boston Latin School

The Boston Cares Bed Build offers a fun, hands-on experience to all volunteers, with all levels of experience, to give back to their community by building twin-sized bed frames from start to finish. Completed bed frames are donated to organizations transitioning out of homelessness. Beds built on MLK Day will benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
